Settle into the heat with the Peak sauna hat – white merino wool, in the shape worn in Finnish saunas. Wool is the traditional material for a sauna hat, worn dry on the head while you sit. Two hats come with every Peak sauna, so this is where you add more for a bigger group.

Care

Rinse it in cool water after each session and press the water out rather than twisting it. Reshape it by hand while it is damp, then air dry it somewhere well ventilated, out of direct sun and away from heaters. Do not leave it to dry inside the sauna or in a bag, where trapped moisture causes odours.

Every few weeks, hand wash it. Soak it for five to ten minutes in cool water with a little wool wash, squeeze the water through, then rinse until the water runs clear. Roll it in a towel to take out the excess, reshape it, and dry it flat or over something rounded like a bowl so it holds its shape.

Hot water, washing machines, dryers, bleach and fabric softener all damage wool, and wringing it stretches it out of shape. Store it completely dry in a cool, ventilated spot. Pilling comes off with a fabric shaver or by hand, and like a towel, a hat is best kept to one person.

Why Wear One

Heat gathers at the top of the room, so your head sits in the hottest air and your ears feel it first because they are thin and exposed. A merino wool hat slows that heat reaching your scalp and ears, so the heat and the löyly arrive gently rather than sharply. Wet it in cool water and squeeze the excess out before you go in, and pull it down over your ears, which is the part people skip. Treat it as a comfort item rather than protective equipment. There is no research on sauna hats, and a hat does not change your core temperature, which is what rises in the heat.

Questions

Is a hat needed?

No. It is a traditional piece, worn dry on the head while you sit.

How many come with a sauna?

Two, in the premium accessory pack with every Peak sauna.

How is it washed?

Hand wash it in cool water with a little wool wash. Squeeze the water out rather than wringing it, reshape it while it is damp, and air dry it out of the sun. Never use a washing machine or a dryer, which shrink and harden the wool. Between washes, a rinse in cool water after each session is enough.
